Said Matinpour, the South Azerbaijani human rights activist, returned to Evin prison on August 4, 2014. Metinpour was granted a 3-day furlough on 28 July 2014. This was his first temporary release after 5 years behind bars without furlough.
In May 2007, Said Matinpour was arrested in Zanjan, South Azerbaijan. He was released on bail of 5 billion Rials ($500,000) after 278 days of detention in solitary confinement. . He was sentenced to 8 years in prison on the charges of “connections to foreigners” and “propaganda against the regime” based on the confession obtained through torture.
