It is reported that the health condition of Azerbaijani physician and political prisoner Hamid Qarahasanlu has deteriorated sharply while he is being held at Yazd Central Prison.

According to human rights sources, due to previous injuries, his left lung has almost completely lost its function. Because of his severe physical weakness, it is currently not possible to perform open surgery. Reports indicate that removal of the left lung may become necessary in the future.

Qarahasanlu was arrested along with his wife, Farzaneh Qarahasanlu, after they attended the fortieth-day memorial ceremony for Hadis Najafi, one of those killed during the 2022 protests in Karaj. The couple was reportedly severely beaten and arrested in front of their minor children.

Hamid Qarahasanlu was initially sentenced to death. However, after the sentence was overturned, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison in exile and has been held in Yazd Prison since September 2023.
