Legal Uncertainty of Siamak Mirzaei and Ali Vaseghi in Ardabil Prison!

Azerbaijani activists Siamak Mirzaei and Ali Vaseghi have remained in Ardabil Central Prison for over 90 days following their arrest, with their legal status still unresolved.

The two activists were arrested on June 28, 2026 (7 Tir 1405), along with Asgar Akbarzadeh, by security forces. Following their arrests, their personal belongings and electronic devices, as well as the mobile phones of their wives, were confiscated. After being transferred to a detention facility and undergoing interrogation, they were subsequently transferred to Ardabil Central Prison.

According to previous reports, Siamak Mirzaei and Ali Vaseghi have been moved between different prison wards during their detention. Their conditions of confinement and the continuing lack of clarity regarding their legal status have heightened concerns among their families and relatives.

Siamak Mirzaei is also suffering from serious knee problems, including injuries to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus. According to reports, he requires medical treatment and surgery. This makes access to appropriate medical care particularly important.

According to sources close to the case, the two activists have been charged by Branch 10 of the Ardabil Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office, with charges including “membership in an illegal group” and “propaganda against the regime.” The judicial proceedings in the case remain ongoing.

Now, after over 3 months of the arrests of Siamak Mirzaei and Ali Vaseghi, their families continue to call for a determination of their legal status, respect for their legal rights, and access to legal counsel and medical services for the two Azerbaijani activists.
