Continued Denial of Medical Treatment to Abbas Lisani

Abbas Lisani, an Azerbaijani national movement activist imprisoned in Evin Prison, remains deprived of specialized medical care in the eleventh month of his detention.

Despite an order by the prison medical clinic’s physician for him to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison for examination by a neurologist and an MRI of his spine, Mr. Lisani has reportedly been prevented from receiving the required medical care by prison authorities, allegedly under pressure from security agencies.

Mr. Lisani has informed his family and close associates that, although he was examined by a neurologist at the prison clinic and was prescribed vitamins, dietary supplements, and pain medication, prison authorities have not only refused to provide these medications but have also, on some occasions, interfered with the regular administration of his prescribed medication for high blood pressure.

Previously, prison authorities had also refused to properly provide Mr. Lisani with his prescribed medications, claiming that the medications were subject to controlled administration. Mr. Lisani refused to take medications that were provided without proper identification and merely described as being “under supervision.” He pointed out to prison officials that medication prescribed by a specialist physician should not be treated as medication requiring such restrictions and must be provided to the patient in its original packaging and with the appropriate identifying information.

Abbas Lisani has suffered from a lumbar disc condition for many years and has undergone several minimally invasive procedures, including ozone therapy. His condition has reportedly worsened in prison due to the denial of access to medications and supplements prescribed by his specialist physician, resulting in a recurrence of his symptoms and increased pain caused by the disc herniation.

Abbas Lisani and Yusef Kari are currently being held in Hall 6 of Ward 7 of Evin Prison, now in the eleventh month of their detention, without the possibility of temporary release and while remaining deprived of adequate medical care and treatment.

On November 11, 2025 (20 Aban 1404), Abbas Lisani, along with Ali Khairjou, Yusef Kari, and Behzad Dashti, were arrested by security forces after appearing outside Evin Prison in support of Azerbaijani activists who were on hunger strike. In a case involving what their supporters describe as baseless charges and proceedings conducted without due process, Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced the four activists to a combined total of 40 years of imprisonment.
