Asgar Akbarzadeh, an Azerbaijani activist imprisoned in Ardabil Central Prison, has experienced a deterioration in his physical condition, including severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Over the past several hours, he has been transferred to the prison infirmary twice and returned to his cell without receiving specialized medical care.

According to reports received from the family and acquaintances of the Azerbaijani activist, Akbarzadeh was transferred to the prison infirmary at around 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 2, after his abdominal pain intensified and he began vomiting continuously. At the infirmary, he was reportedly given only pain medication and then returned to his cell.

Despite taking the pain medication, his condition did not improve, and at around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, he was transferred to the prison infirmary again. According to the latest information, the severe abdominal pain and vomiting have continued, and the possibility of an intestinal infection has also been raised.

Given the worsening of Akbarzadeh’s condition, his cellmates have called for his immediate transfer to medical facilities outside the prison and for specialized medical examinations.

Concern has increased because Akbarzadeh suffers from grade 3 fatty liver disease and, according to those close to him, has been denied regular access to medications prescribed by his specialist and to the medical services he requires.

Asgar Akbarzadeh was arrested on June 27, 2026, along with Siamak Mirzaei and Ali Vasseghi, by security forces. During the arrests, their mobile phones, laptops, computers, and other personal belongings, as well as their wives’ mobile phones, were confiscated.

The Azerbaijani activist has now remained in Ardabil Central Prison for 58 days since his arrest, still without his judicial status being determined.
