IRAN’S INTELLIGENCE AGENCY RE-ARRESTS DR. ASADI IN TABRIZ

Dr. Asadullah Asadi was arrested on 20th Jan 2016 in Tabriz, South Azerbaijan and transferred to Ettelaat’s headquarter in Tabriz. It is feared that Dr. Asadi is possibly being subjected to mistreatment and torture.
Dr. Asadi, a prominent Azerbaijani human rights activist who is a general physician by profession had been arrested 5 years ago for his peaceful political activities and transferred to Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison. He was accused of “association with foreign enemies” and sentenced to 10 years in Prison by Islamic Revolutionary Tribunal of Tabriz. However, following the out-pour of letters of public support submitted by the residences of more than 80 towns and villages of the region of Qaradagh in which Dr. Asadi volunteered for decades, the appeal court was persuaded to consider the lower court’s sentence disproportionate and reduce it to 5 years. Mr. Asadi was released early due to his severe health problems. However, he was rearrested 4 days ago in Tabriz, the capital of South Azerbaijan.
