Front Line Defenders has expressed concern over Tabriz-based lawyer Dr. Ebulfezl Renjberi, who has been held without trial for five months on “espionage” charges, and has called for his immediate release.
The international human rights organization Front Line Defenders has expressed serious concern over the situation of Dr. Ebulfezl Renjberi, a well-known lawyer and human rights defender held in Tabriz Central Prison.
According to the organization’s statement, October 8, 2025, marks the fifth month of Rencberi’s arbitrary and extrajudicial detention.
Dr. Rencberi, an academic and lawyer from Tabriz, is known for defending political activists in South Azerbaijan. However, Branch 15 of the Tabriz Revolutionary Court has charged him with “espionage on behalf of the Republic of Azerbaijan” — an accusation based on his participation in an academic conference in Baku seven years ago.
Front Line Defenders reported that Rencberi has been held in solitary confinement for more than three months, without access to a lawyer, his family, or necessary medication. The organization emphasized that the charges are retaliatory and politically motivated, and that Iran’s “espionage law” has become a tool to silence human rights defenders and ethnic minorities.
