Reza Haji Karimi, Chairman of the Board of the Iranian Water Industry Federation, has issued a warning on this matter. In an interview with Iran’s ILNA news agency, he stated that due to salt storms, the evacuation of provinces adjacent to Lake Urmia has already begun.
“Today, Lake Urmia is like an emergency patient in a coma—this is only the beginning of the tragedy,” Haji Karimi added. The Chairman of the Water Industry Federation noted that the death of Lake Urmia, which had been forecast since 1995, is now becoming a reality.
It should be noted that, according to the latest reports, Lake Urmia has completely dried up and is no longer visible in satellite images.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had announced during his election campaign that one of his main goals, if elected, would be the restoration of Lake Urmia.
