Reportedly, in an attempt to prevent peaceful demonstrations, the Iranian Security and Intelligence Ministry has conducted a mass arrest of Southern Azerbaijani civil right activists in major cities including but not limited to Tabriz, Mugansheher, Ahar, Binab, Keleyber, Malikan and some other cities. The trusted sources have reported of arbitrary arrests of hundreds of Azerbaijani activist on the eve of International Mother Language Day.
Mr. Saeed Hosseini and Naser Abdulhoseinzadeh were apprehended in Muganshehr two days ago. Sajjad Afruzan, Kerim Fayyazi, Bahman Khalegi were arrested in Malikan.
The major arrests took place in the city of Ahar near Tabriz when Southern Azerbaijani activists gathered at the private residence of Mr. Akbar Abulzadeh to celebrate the international Mother Language Day. The armed forces of Ettelaat stormed into the private residence applied unreasonable force, beaten up the participants and arrested approximately a hundred activists. Some sources have also reported of mass arrest of Azerbaijani Turks in Tehran, Iran’s capital.
Mr. Abbas Lisani and Ibrahim Rashidi, Akbar Azad the prominent patriotic movement leaders are among the recent detainees.
